Hey, I’m Shannon Thornburg, LMHCA (She/Her)
My passion is making sure you feel seen, building your trust in yourself, and helping you find peace in the present. I value empathy deeply and thrive on understanding the unique paths everyone walks. My experience spans working with folks at every stage of life—from those stepping into adulthood to those reflecting on a life well-lived.
Shannon's journey into counseling began with hands-on work at HOPE Services Hawaii, where she provided trauma-informed care to elderly individuals facing homelessness. Her involvement in suicide prevention and crisis intervention equips her with the skills to support those who struggle with suicidal thoughts. She has helped individuals navigate the impacts of various mental health challenges, including complex trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and ADHD. Her experience and passion for working with LGBTQ+ individuals have further enriched her practice. Additionally, Shannon's background as a certified trauma-informed yoga instructor in Portland, Oregon, enhances her therapeutic approach. She incorporates body-scan mindfulness exercises into her practice, offering clients a holistic and embodied approach to processing trauma.
Serving the students at University of Hawaii -Hilo Counseling Services, she developed her skills in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness, somatic therapy, and exposure therapy. She uses a person-centered approach by tailoring interventions to meet individual needs while empowering her clients on their journey of self-exploration.
Shannon believes in creating a safe haven where clients can freely explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors without fear of judgment. She walks alongside her clients as they navigate the complexities of self-acceptance, particularly during moments of inner conflict.
